Major Castle Projects
Skibo Castle, Sutherland, Listed Grade A
Maxwell and Company was the lead design consultant and project manager for the famous Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle from its inception in 1992 until it was sold in 2003. We designed and executed works to the Castle, all the estate cottages, designed the range of sporting and recreational facilities and organised contracts for services infrastructure. From 2003 we remodelled and extended the golf clubhouse and designed the health spa for the new owners.
Gordon Castle, Morayshire, Listed Grade A
Maxwell and Company was engaged to design the alterations to this very special house, formerly the principal seat of the Dukes of Gordon. The interior of the house was rearranged and renovated to enable its use by parties fishing some of the most famous salmon beats on the river Spey. The house now much reduced in size, was originally one of the largest Castles ever built in Scotland.
Glenborrodale Castle, Argyllshire, Listed Grade A
James Maxwell led the team who renovated and redesigned the Castle and estate at Glenborrodale on Ardnamurchan. It was originally designed by Sidney Mitchell in the late Victorian Scottish Baronial style for Cecil Rhodes partner Charles Rudd. The buildings and grounds were in a dilapidated state and had been unsympathetically altered during the latter part of the 20th century. We restored both the buildings and the estate to provide luxury hotel accommodation in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Dalcross Castle, Inverness-shire, Listed Grade A
A classic fortalice dating from 1620 this 4 storey turreted castle was built for the Lovat family. It sits discreetly on a hill overlooking the Moray firth. The estate was bought by a prominent London businessman for his private family home in 1996. Maxwell and Company were commissioned to transform this beautiful building to provide 21st century comfort whilst preserving its important historic fabric and character.
Inverlochy Castle, Lochaber, Listed Grade B
The first great country house hotel in Scotland and still retaining its pre-eminence amongst the elite hotels in the UK, Inverlochy Castle was built in 1863 for Lord Abinger as a private home. In 1946 it was bought by the Hobbs family who turned it into an hotel in 1969 and Maxwell and Company were privileged to have been retained by the family for all architectural work carried out between 1983 and 1996 when the Castle was sold. Maxwell & Company’s most significant project was the conversion of the 4-storey north tower which had been added to the Castle in 1889.
Aberuchill Castle Perthshire, listed Grade A
As a result of our extensive experience of historic buildings ,Maxwell & Company were appointed to carry out a due diligence inspection and report on the fabric of this C17th tower house which had been substantially remodelled in C19th. Acting in conjunction with London agents on behalf of a Russian purchaser ,we undertook a walk through inspection and survey which subsequently led to a successful acquisition .
Kilcoy Castle, Invernessshire, listed Grade A
Maxwell &Company has been appointed to undertake a due diligence inspection and appraisal of this C17th fortalice for American clients and, subsequently, to lead a programme of repairs and improvements in a sustainable design empathetic with the historic fabric.
