Maxwell and Company London was appointed to carry out the refurbishment of a 350 m2 three storey maisonette in the heart of Islington, London. The brief was to convert what was once a baker and then button factory into a modern 3 bedroom apartment. The response looked to bring much needed natural light into the property especially to the basement floor where the kitchen was to be located. To increase the ceiling height in the basement the original floor was removed and a new light weight construction installed, this presented an opportunity to add a sense of drama with the new steel and glass staircase leading down from the main living . By installing Dinesen douglas fur flooring throught it helped unify the bedrooms to the rear of the property with the living accommodation to the front whilst at the same time creating a lighter, contemporary, open plan space. The result, over the lower ground and ground floors, is a space that merges the modern and traditional elements of the design seamlessly.
